Green stinkwood is a spreading shrub or small tree up to 7 m tall. It grows in sandy soils near rivers, creeks and swamps, and is a good coloniser of disturbed land. With leaves reduced to tiny scales, it relies on green branchlets for photosynthesis. When its wood is burnt, there is a smell like urine – hence the common name. Pea shaped flowers occur throughout the year, although less in winter.
