Swishbush is an open and often weeping shrub which grows up to 5 m tall. It is quite widespread and grows in sandy and clayey soils near wetlands and in winter-wet depressions. Adult specimens lack leaves but have slender green phyllodes up to 30 cm long. Flowers are produced in “golden sprays” outside the phyllodes in mid spring to early summer. The name “swishbush” refers to the sound made by its branches when swaying in the wind. The species name juncea is Latin for “rush-like”.
